Theoretically, all patients with breast cancer can undergo breast-conserving surgery. The most important factor in this is the ratio of the volume of cancerous tissue in the breast and the volume of the remaining breast tissue. If the breast tumour is very large and the breast volume will remain small when the tumour is removed, there is no theoretical need to perform breast conserving surgery in this patient.
